History of waist beads

Published on December 14, 2018 at 9:26 PM

The history of waist beads dates back to ancient Egypt where they were worn by beautiful women as a status symbol. In Ghana where I’m born waist beads are worn by different tribes. In the Ewe culture waist beads are worn for the following reasons:

  • As a symbol of felinity and sensuality: The traditional waist beads are the ‘’Victoria’s Secret’’ of Africa. The ‘’African lingerie.’’ Only the partner of the woman is honoured to see the waist beads completely.
  • Worn on babies during naming ceremonies to accentuate the hips and waistlines from a child.
  • As a weight measure when gaining weight. Waist beads are supposed to fall elegantly on the hips. When the waist beads climb up or breaks it means u have gained weight.
  • When added precious stones, waist beads can take healing, spiritual and fertility qualities.
  • When a waist beads breaks without any reason it has a spiritual meaning.

These days not a lot of people maintain the culture of wearing the traditional waist beads. Traditional waist beads are strung on cotton cord and are WHITHOUT a clasp or hook. And are worn along the bikini line and NOT on the waist. Women of all shapes and size can confidently wear waist beads.

All of the waist beads from Handmade BySanaah are imported from my country of birth, Ghana. We also have a collection of waist beads from Togo. Togo is the country where the ancestors of my mom's use to leave before they came to Ghana.

In January we are going to use waist beads for weight loss. Keep an eye on our website for more updates about this.
